Riven (2024): "First" Playthrough
I feel like I owe it to everyone who's enjoyed my Riven Retrospective playthrough over the past seven years to share with you a (mostly) unedited first play of the new Riven remake from 2024, mostly in VR (except for the end-game content). I've only edited lightly to remove dead air and menuing. Yes I make dumb mistakes and misidentify things!
I plan to do an updated look at Riven (then and now) in the future, but for now please enjoy this long-play from a long-time Riven fan.

Blue Ridge Hiking During COVID-19

Despite going to the Boone / Blowing Rock area every year for the past few years, we were pretty hesitant this year. With face masks and caution, we ventured up for ~12 days and braved the crowds. With significant rain in the forecast starting at Day 4, we decided to liven it up by shooting a lot of video and trying to document what a weird year of hiking it was. Enjoy! 00:00 Days 1-3 - Summary...
UCF: Opportunity

A dreamlike memoir of my decade of working at #UCF as a web developer and being a proud Knight. For weeks this summer I explored campus and visited colleagues, filming everything. I woke up for sunrises on the top of empty garages. I stalked cats, squirrels, raccoons and sandhill cranes. I interviewed peers and clients. I pulled weather cam footage and swam in the fountain. In all, I collected ...

I prefer the pre-rendered, 360 degree node-based system. It's just more relaxing than having to use wasd & mouse. I wish they would make the remakes like Myst 3 or 4. They should have learned that from Myst 5 😅
Apparently they proposed it for twice what they thought it would take, $265,000, but it ended up being more like $600,000 (or $700,000, according to the New York Times).
Fun Fact: the clothing that Saveedro wears in the game is actually a repurposed "page" from the tapestries in Naranya that show the various glyphs in the last puzzle of the game; you can see how on the front of his clothes the yellow curves of the glyphs are present, but obscured by the fact that he's essentially wearing drapes to cover himself.
It is flatly untrue that Cyan did not want to develop Myst. While this game was in development Cyan were working on both RealMyst and Uru (set in the myst universe)
Correct, it would have been more appropriate to say "mainline Myst titles." realMyst (like almost all their Myst ports) seems to have been an engine test / exercise.
I know this is a little late cuz I'm just now finding your channel but thanks for doing doing these walk throughs!
So does 'The Room' series of games owe It's lenses to Riven or does Riven owe their eye glass to 'The Room'?
Gotta say, I'm not stoked on that ending. But it was nice to see the whole game though. Me as a teen ager couldn't ever hope to beat it
I remember writing to the publisher of The Book of Atrus as a fan hoping someone would consider turning the story into a movie. The response I got back was a refusal of rights legal notice from lawyers at Disney. I was 16.
I was baffled on the beginning of the water puzzle in Channelwood when I was a kid too. And I'm kicking myself because if I had any sense of plumbing I would've 1) known what to look for in that beginning cabin under the windmill and 2) seen that the spigot in the original version was in a lit square of sunlight on the floor. However being that mechanic was so hyper realistic I looked right past it without recognizing the obvious.
While the anticipatory animal behavior from Edanna in Myst 3 is serviceable albeit highly convenient, in this game I think it goes a step too far in its outlandish logic. Granted we're following the skill patterns of different characters in this one compared to Atrus/Gehn in the first three. I just don't see anything rewarding about accomplishing many of these puzzles set up throughout the game. Something is missing about the cognitive connection that makes them approachable from something other than trying every combination to see what happens.
Man, these games take me back every time i see them. I played myst and riven on my friends gateway computer😂 simpler times
Your videos on this series are the best around. Would love to see you play through the 2021 Myst remake too!
The number 25 in D'ni actually has 2 different symbols. The more correct way as its a base 25 number system would be as a 2 digit D'ni with a 1 in the "25's" place and a 0 in the "1's" place. We see a 2 digit D'ni number in Ghen's journal so this is a way they write numbers. The other way is just an X, I guess a simpler faster way to write the number 25. Similar to how we abbreviate 1000 as k for example.
Finished Riven 2024 last week, was curious about original, you taught me a lot about the story I didn't grasp!. yeah I cant imagine swapping disks to switch islands lol.. This was so great, thanks!
It's a rare treat to see such a longform developer interview! Thank you for doing this.
this game is so beautiful. The water. The sky. The ROCKS of the islands. I want to be there and have a picnic by the water.
He’s back!
The sound of the tone generator machine in the rocket ship reminds me of the "intermission" music in Monty Python and Holy Grail
Damn that Cyan intro is nostalgic as hell
I learned the numbers from the game in the schoolhouse. Count the clicks. Edit: I loved this, because I'm old now and I can't play games like this unless I take reams of notes. I can't remember shit. I watched this all, in segments. I gather that you have others such as Myst. I'll be watching that too. Thank you!
Great playthru Jordan. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for playing!!!
Thank you so much Eric! Promise I'd still love to do an interview or three one day.
I enjoy your commentary..I too played these games at release..Riven was the only game in the whole trilogy I wasn’t able to get the best ending.
Strange, I played the game twice and in the animal puzzle the order was different than yours.
Yeah! It's randomized per playthrough, except the last one.
@@JordanRogers85 Strange I’ve launched the game a 3rd time but I always get the same code (spoiler: fish, beetle, butterfly (?), sunner, ytram, wahrk) maybe it’s a bug, also I’m running the macOS version.
Its outstanding !!
Surprised you didn't go into the Glyph Tower and it's secrets, that would've been fun to hear from Andrew about it.
51:45 The Star expense team found a funny solution for that long bridge in the remake.
I'm glad Catherine scared you like she scared me 🙂
Hey what is your Twitch channel called?
twitch.tv/radringtail
Isnt this an older game? 90s/2000s? Is this what an RTX 4090 do when particle tracing is turned on? 😮😅
Thank you for taking the time to explore the areas and things that do not lead to the unraveling of specific puzzles but rather add flavor to the overall experience.
I just watched the entire video. Sometime around 1999 I played the original version for the first time. I'm afraid my current PC isn't powerful enough to play this version of Riven and I know it might actually be more fun to look at it until I can play it myself. But I was too curious to wait until then. Luckily I don't have a perfect memory, so as soon as I can play this version, I will probably have forgotten this video ;) It was a pleasure to see you play the game and hear your nice comments on it. Good job. Many thanks for that! I really enjoyed this.
Which VR headset did you use?
Quest 2, tethered to the PC via USB cable
Thank you for the walkthrough! Loved it!
Dude, really appreciated ALL your Myst videos- gave me closure to the series that I didnt want to play but wanted to still experience. Thanks for making them
These games are where the idea of Escape Rooms originated.
I wasn’t surprised that Sirrus had a blanket and supplies to set up a camp. Even though he thought Spire had people, it would be a good idea to bring camping supplies in case it took more than a day to get there on foot.
watches you play you got lucky landing where you did...so far I found all the domes and have opened them... but that is as far as I got
Nice to see you again after six years from Riven Sequel to Myst, great video. 👍
i wonder if you went to jungle, and crater before destroying the bridge if you could walk on it
I want to know why Catherine leaves you in her prison That makes little sense.
They cut a lot out of the original because their budget was tiny. Fine. But make the tiny part you have look and sound good. In the village, when you have wood railings that don't even align to fit through the post holes ... what the heck are you even doing? I'll ignore the horrendous characters and animations, but why is the lighting so bad? The dark and mysterious mood of the original RIven is completely gone. I have a very strong feeling most of this production was outsourced to India.
The 2024 remake is such a disappointment. They could have at least left the flyover animations in the books. I don't understand why they neutered the puzzles. Is there a new unspoken law which says games are not allowed to be difficult?
Our boy Atrus. Nice enough guy, but a lousy electrician.
Pretty good first run. Took me about 9 hours to completely solve everything...my own fault though for not really taking the numbering system seriously at first.
Thank you for the video. As i sad 3 or 4 years ago: your calm aura is really enjoyable and I like listening to you. Keep it up. :)
Honestly the maze in Selentic was mostly just tedious more than confusing, though I was lucky and had played the mechanic age first and so I remembered the sounds and the direction they go
They've created a great looking game.
1:59:13 Imagine sticking your foot in there. OSHA violation.
1:43:45 Still working my way through the video but the lens is also useful on the domes if you have not yet realized.
Did you happen to record your reaction to the demo as it seems some of this has already been spoiled for you from that playthrough?
No sadly, sorry!
